A third of all U.S. families have a pet and the threat of a salmonella outbreak linked to two popular brands of dry pet food last week has many on edge. A study released Monday finds pets can give family members the illness — even when they show no sign of being sick.

Shelter: 144 pets have found new homes
Orange County Animal Care had a big turnout Saturday for its annual Forever Friends for Free. Director Ryan Drabek reported Monday that 144 pets were adopted to new families: 79 dogs, 63 cats, and 2 rabbits.
